Signs of a Failing Propshaft
Don’t Ignore These Signs of a Failing Propshaft (Driveshaft)!
Your vehicle’s propshaft – also called a driveshaft – plays a crucial role in transferring power from the engine to the wheels. When it starts to fail, it doesn’t just affect performance – it can lead to serious (and expensive) damage to other drivetrain components.
At CarTech Namibia, we often see propshaft problems that could have been avoided if the early warning signs had been spotted. Here’s what you should look out for.
Common Symptoms of a Failing Propshaft
1. Vibrations & Shuddering
- If you feel excessive vibrations, especially during acceleration, your propshaft might be the culprit. This can be caused by worn U-joints, damaged bearings, or imbalanced components. Sometimes you might also notice a shuddering feeling when accelerating from a standstill.
2. Strange Noises
- Clunking or banging – often when shifting between drive and reverse, possibly from a damaged slip yoke or bent shaft.
- Squeaking – may indicate worn U-joints or bearings in need of lubrication.
- Clicking or knocking – can signal a faulty CV joint or worn bearings.
- Grinding – usually a sign of severe wear or damage.
3. Difficulty Turning or Loss of Power
- A faulty propshaft can make steering feel heavier or less responsive.
You might also notice a drop in power transfer, especially during acceleration.
4. Fluid Leaks
- Leaks near the propshaft area could point to a failing seal or worn internal parts.
5. Other Warning Signs
- Vibrations in the steering wheel or footwell
- Juddering while accelerating
- A “delay” feeling between turning the wheel and the car responding
Why You Shouldn’t Wait
Ignoring propshaft problems can lead to:
- Damage to the gearbox or differential
- More expensive repairs down the line
- Potential safety risks
